Thanks to the brainwashing by the media, most of us associate mothers-in-law with villainy and vengeance. For too long now, they have been portrayed in pop culture as some sort of weird creatures who are always at loggerheads with their daughters-in-law! Think Monster-in-law and Sweet Home Alabama. And closer home, well, just think of any random Ekta Kapoor series and you’ll have an example for sure.
But why is this such a common trend? Is it true? Are mothers-in-law really monsters who are out to harass their daughters-in-law? All you need to do is look around and you’ll find your answer – no. Not every mother-in-law is a monster out to get you. All you need to do is reach out to them, and try and know them.
So, if you’re a bride-to-be who’s worried about if and how you will get along with your mother-in-law – stop right there. Stop worrying, stop fretting, and stop letting this stress you out. Because, darling, we have your back! And also, chances are that your mother-in-law is just another sweet lady waiting to be befriended.
Wondering how you could do that? Well, that’s why we are here – to tell you ways in which you can get closer to your mum-in-law and get along famously, like a house on fire!
1. Grab A Meal For Just The Two Of You
Go out and have your girly time with the MIL. And better still, make it an impromptu outing as opposed to a planned one. Not only does it add a flavor of ‘adventure’ to the day, it also gives you the chance to have an honest, hear- to-heart interaction. One where you haven’t already prepared what you are going to say and how you are going to respond.
2. Speak To Her As Often As Possible
This might feel a little tough in the beginning, especially if you are not too much of a talker over the phone (trust us, we understand), but it is absolutely worth it. Let her know that she is important to you and that her opinions matter. And also try to understand her way of looking at things. This makes it easier for both of you in the long run.
3. Ask Her About Your Would-Be Groom
Nothing helps two women bond better than discussing a common love interest. And in this case, the two of you aren’t even competitors in the real sense of the word! Just invest in spending some time with her, talk about everything under the moon regarding your fiancé. Also, dig for details that he has obviously not divulged to you! Trust us, this will be the best time spent with your mother-in-law.
4. Prepare A Meal Together
As simple as this may sound, it is also a great time of bonding over spices. And in case you cannot do this in person, at least call her up to discuss recipes and ask her how her son likes certain foods to be prepared. This not only sends out the message that you need her to help you, it also says that you care about your fiancé and want to take care of him as much as his mother always has. Which is the absolute truth, obviously!
5. Plan Some Shopping Together
Who doesn’t like shopping, right? And what better way to make friends with your mother-in-law than over choosing the right color or the right cut of clothes. It doesn’t even have to be clothes that you’re shopping for. It could be any random thing – even home décor stuff like curtains or furniture. Just take her along and it’s bound to be fun for sure.
6. Meet Her As Often As Possible
If you were in the same city as your mother, wouldn’t you drop in whenever you could? We are not asking you to call on her as often as you would call on your mother, but do it as frequently as you can. This will really help you familiarize yourselves with each other and also help in making things smoother between the two of you (if there were any wrinkles there in the first place).
7. Be Honest With Her, Always
Yes, you might feel that it isn’t right for you to express your opinion all the time, or that it is okay for you to let something pass even if you are not too happy about it. But trust us, this is never a wise thing to do. It is always good to let your mother-in-law know exactly what it is that you feel about something. Otherwise, it will cause problems later on.
8. Always Express Your Gratitude Towards Her
Never let her feel like you do not appreciate her presence in your life. After all, she is the one who raised the man you gave your heart to, remember? Without her, your life just wouldn’t be the same, and do not hesitate to let her know this!
